Welcome to OverWrite Lite for Windows 3.1a
Copyright 1995 Alligator Software
In order to properly install this Lite version of OverWrite for Windows,
you must perform three steps.
First, unzip the single zipped file (OWLITE.ZIP). This is done by typing
the command PKUNZIP OWLITE.ZIP. All of the files contained within
OWLITE.ZIP will be extracted, including this file (README.1ST). YOU SHOULD
NOTE THE LOCATION TO WHICH THE FILES ARE EXTRACTED SO YOU CAN LOG THERE
AT THE SECOND STEP.
Second, be sure you are logged to the location where the files were
extracted in the first step and run the file INSTALL.BAT, one of the
files extracted during the first step. This will create a subdirectory
named OWLITE on your C drive, place all relevant files in the
subdirectory, and place two batch files, OWLITON.BAT and OWLITOFF.BAT, in
your root directory. OverWrite Lite for Windows requires these file
locations. The full version allows you to select locations.
Third, start Windows, go to the Run command in Windows and run
C:\OWLITE\SETUP.EXE to complete the Windows installation.
After installation, you can find basic instructions in the file
MANUAL.TXT in the C:\OWLITE subdirectory. Just use the File Manager or
other utility to print the file. Please note that you must install the
OverWrite driver prior to starting Windows. This is done by running the
batch file OWLITON.BAT.
What to do if OverWrite does not work at first:
If OverWrite does not work at first, it is likely that the printer driver
you are using is not fully compatible with your printer. In particular,
the Microsoft Universal Printer Driver for LaserJet III printers does not
fully support all Hewlett Packard printer features. This driver
is shipped with Windows for Workgroups and Windows 3.11.
To check for the Microsoft Driver, do the following:
1. click on Help in OverWrite
2. then click on About
3. then double-click anywhere on the text inside the box.
You should see the Device Name, the Driver Name and the Printer
Port currently in use. If the Driver Name is HPPCL5MS and not HPPCL5A,
and the Device Name is HP LASERJET III,you are probably using the wrong
driver.
How to install the correct driver:
The correct driver to use with HP Laser Jet Series III printers is the
genuine Hewlett Packard driver originally shipped with Windows 3.1, but
later discarded by Microsoft when it attempted to develop one driver for
all printers. This driver is available on COMPUSERVE in the HPPER forum
Library 2 under the name L3WIN3.ZIP. It is 283,077 bytes in size.
If you prefer not to download it from Compuserve, Alligator Software will
provide it on a 3.5 inch diskette for $5.00 including shipping and
applicable tax. Print the Registration form for more details on ordering.
Once you have the driver file, unzip it to a diskette. We supply the
driver already unzipped. Then go to your Main Group, double click on the
Control Panel Icon, and double click on the Printers Icon.
You should then see the HP Laserjet III printer as one of the Installed
printers. Highlight it and click on the Remove button. You will be asked
if you are sure. Indicate Yes. The Laserjet printer will disappear from
the list of installed printers.
Then select Add. A box of printers will appear. Highlight Install
Unlisted or Updated Printer at the top of the list and select Install.
You will be prompted to insert a disk with printer drivers. Insert the
disk with the HP designed driver, being sure to indicate the correct drive,
and click on OK. You will then see a list of Laserjet III family printers.
Highlight the correct one and continue on. During the process, you may be
informed that the currently installed version of a file is newer than the
one you are attempting to install and asked if you want to install the file.
Indicate Yes.
Then finish the installation by setting your newly installed printer as the
default and exiting both Printers and the Control Panel. You may desire to
turn the Print Manager off by checking the appropriate box. The Print
Manager usually slows printing down.
You will have installed the Hewlett Packard driver version 31.3.89, which
is superior to the Microsoft all purpose driver.
When you start OverWrite again, the driver problem should have disappeared.
About networks:
OverWrite was designed to function with printers directly attached to the
local printer ports of a computer (LPT1 or LPT2). OverWrite has been used
on networks by individuals who were familiar with networking systems and
commands such as Capture. Alligator Software is not able to give specific
installation instructions for networks or answer questions because individual
networks vary so much.
